What does Paul have to say about being a Project Manager?
About the culture
“It’s a fantastic culture. It’s grown over the years but it really hasn’t changed its core feeling. There is a very close connection with everyone amongst the business – you’re not just a number. And there’s also a good culture outside of work, not just inside the team.”
About the people
“Right from scratch, they’ve let me build my own team. They are a great team, very supportive. If you ring someone, they’ll always pick up the phone. And I have good personal relationships with some of the guys – we go out to concerts, play golf. Nothing to do with work, just friendships we’ve built along the way.”
About the work
“I’m involved heavily with the financial side of things, with estimating, running the teams, labour allocation, managing their training, what sort of wage level they’re on – everything from top to bottom.
It’s a very close relationship with the customer. We’re like a conduit between all the teams we work with. They come from different backgrounds, so we are their end connection to what they are selling. And we’ve earned their trust. We’re not just in it for the money, we’re there to support them, to make it easy for everyone. To grow everyone ‘s business not just our own.”
About career opportunities
“I joined 9 years ago as an Electrician and moved up to become Site Supervisor then Project Coordinator before taking on the Project Manager position 3 years ago. I really like the job and my work-life balance, so I’m not sure if I want to take the next step to become Program Manager. But I do know that I could if I wanted to, and that I’d get all the support I’d need to make a success of it.”
